Alzheimers Care

Alzheimer’s Disease is an irreversible, progressive brain disease that slowly destroys memory and thinking skills, eventually even the ability to carry out the simplest tasks. As the disease progresses, families and caregivers will need to consider other treatment and care options for their loved ones afflicted with this debilitating disease.

According to the 2009 Alzheimer’s Association Facts and Figures Report, more than 5 million Americans suffer from Alzheimer’s Disease making it the fifth leading cause of death for those 65 and older in the United States. Alzheimers disease accounts for $150 billion in estimated annual costs and in Georgia alone, there are currently about 120,000 people with Alzheimer’s disease and the number is expected to grow to 160,000 by 2025.

With such staggering growth in the numbers of seniors affected by Alzheimer’s Disease, Assisted Living Locators™ Atlanta has conducted comprehensive research on available resources and options in Atlanta for specific Alzheimer’s and Memory Care homes.

Additionally, we provide much needed information for caregivers to consider when looking for their best Alzheimer care options.

When considering Alzheimer’s care options, it is important to know that Georgia law (O.C.G.A. Section 31-8-180 et seq.) requires most nursing homes, assisted living centers, home health care services and hospices to submit a Disclosure of Treatment form for their Alzheimer patients or residents.

While hospitals and physicians (as well as their employees) are exempt from the disclosure requirement, the form must be submitted on behalf of any nursing home, personal care home, hospice, respite care service, adult day program or home health agency they own or operate.

The Disclosure Form from the treatment facility will describe:

* The facility’s overall philosophy and mission

* The processes for accepting patients

* The selection process for individualized services provided in its treatment program

* Staffing, staff training and continuing education practices

* The physical environment, including safety and security features

* The frequency and types of activities for patients

* Its involvement with families and family support programs

* The costs and fees associated with treatment
